Lightning strike believed to have caused Raleigh house fire

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A lightning strike is believed to have caused a Raleigh house fire on Southampton Drive Wednesday overnight, according to fire officials.

Investigators said two people were inside the home when the incident happened. The occupants reported hearing and seeing a lightning strike before noticing flames coming from beneath the home's rear deck. They immediately called 911 and safely evacuated.

Northern Wake Fire Department crews were responding to another call in Raleigh when they were diverted to the structure fire. Firefighters arrived within minutes, secured the home's gas supply and extinguished the remaining fire.

The two occupants were displaced and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

No residents were injured. One firefighter suffered minor injuries, was treated at the scene and later released.

Officials said the investigation indicates the fire was likely caused by a lightning strike. The investigation remains ongoing.
